Young from Belgium
Mattice Boets is an award-winning Belgian designer based in Dubai who creates collectible art pieces and exquisitely crafted design products. At the heart of his work lies Mattice’s philosophy of Natural Intelligence, which seeks to create pure, harmonious forms through a collaboration between human creativity and technology, making them feel as though they’ve been shaped by nature itself. His work balances seamlessly fluid designs with state-of-the-art craftsmanship, bringing visionary ideas to life in ways that are as effortless to use as they are graceful in presence.
Mattice’s designs have been exhibited internationally, most recently at Dubai Design Week 2024, where he presented an exclusive series of collectible design and art pieces. His creations range from functional design products—what he calls “functional pieces of art”— to sculptural works that fully embody his expansive and unbounded artistic vision. Every piece he produces is meticulously crafted, employing cutting-edge technologies to perfect both form and function.
Having worked alongside renowned designer Ross Lovegrove, Mattice has contributed to dozens of groundbreaking projects, from parametric sculptures to architectural designs like the Spacedome. This mentorship has deeply shaped his vision, fusing his technical expertise with an ability to push boundaries across scales, from products to large-scale installations.
Mattice’s achievements include winning 5 design awards, among them the prestigious Golden A’ Design Award in 2019 for his Reverse Clock, making him the youngest winner in the award's history. He is currently ranked #11 among the best Gold Award winners of all time and has been featured in the World Design Leaderboards, where he is listed as the #1 agency of all time for furniture design as of 2023. His work has been widely published in over 100 international outlets, including Designboom, Design Milk, gooood, the Corriere della Sera, and national Belgian newspapers. His exhibitions include Dubai Design Week 2024 and MOOD (Museum of Outstanding Design) in Como, Italy, showcasing his work to a diverse and international audience.
Born in Belgium, Mattice holds a Master’s in Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, and a Bachelor’s in Industrial Product Design, magna cum laude, from Howest University of Applied Sciences in Belgium. His research at the Material Architecture Lab—led by Daniel Widrig and Dr. Guan Lee—focused on the cultivation and design of living materials at an architectural scale, a groundbreaking first for the lab since its founding in 2004.
Mattice’s journey is shaped by a commitment to exploring the boundaries of design and art. Through his work, he creates objects that embody his vision of a seamless union between the natural world and state-of-the-art technology, inviting others to engage with thoughtful, boundary-challenging creations.
